Total Metal Open Air III: Subfire’s Night of Fire and Steel
Under a green-drenched sky at Camping Japara in Opanets, with woodsmoke and anticipation thick in the air, Subfire took the stage at Total Metal Open Air III. Eight songs. One night. No mercy.
This night carried its own story before a single note was played. Our main vocalist couldn’t be with us for this show, and it was our great friend Billy Vass who stepped up on short notice to hold the mic and carry the songs. Brotherhood, in this genre, is never just a lyric and Billy proved exactly that.
We opened with Sacred Destinies, a door kicked off its hinges with no warning at all. Rage of Emotions followed before the crowd could catch its breath, and the front rows became a single roaring animal, fists up, throats already raw.
By the time Soul Redemption bled into Infinity, sweat and floodlights had become the same substance. Then came Path of the Assassin, a song built for exactly this kind of night, steel-string precision and blast-beat fury cutting straight through the crowd.
Black Edged Meitu pulled the room down into darker, heavier territory, before Strength & Hope lifted it right back up, fists in the air, voices cracking on every chorus like the whole crowd had rehearsed it with us.
And then, Samurai. The closer. The blade coming down. There is no better way to end a set than with a song built entirely around discipline and honor, and for one night, under a Bulgarian sky, that’s exactly what we were.
Massive thanks to the Total Metal Open Air III crew for having us, to the crowd at Camping Japara for giving us everything back, and once again to Billy Vass, who didn’t just fill a gap, he made the night his own. This is what the scene is built on.
